Lent at St. John’s

This year, we are aiming to encourage each other to use some of the prayer resources which exist in church throughout most of the year, and at the same time to launch a new venture. On the first and third Tuesdays of the month, at 7.30 p.m. we hold respectively an opportunity for quiet meditation and for shared prayer.

On the first and third Tuesdays we will be starting an opportunity to read the Bible together, and to discuss what we read. We will begin by looking at Mark's gospel. This is aimed particularly at those who don't see themselves as  especially expert on the Bible, so don't be put off, and do give it a try!

All the sessions will begin with refreshments. If one or other seems your cup of tea, do feel free to come to the session of your choice, though you are encouraged to try all of them and possibly be surprised by how useful they are!

What’s left this Lent:

Tuesday 28th March

7.30 p.m. Reading Mark's Gospel

Tuesday 4th April

7.30 p.m. Meditation

Tuesday 11th April (Holy Week)

7.30 p.m. Reading Mark's gospel

Finally, we are aware that some people prefer not to go out in the evenings, so there is an alternative venue on Monday afternoons at 15 Berwick Avenue at 2.00 p.m. - topic to be decided.

On Easter Eve, Saturday 15th April,

the Heatons Churches Partnership has hired the Savoy cinema in Heaton Moor

to show a film about the resurrection: “RISEN”.

(Certificate 12a – children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.)

A Roman soldier, played by Joseph Fiennes, is trying to find a missing body.

He needs to quash the rumours about a resurrection, in case this causes an uprising.

Admission is £6.00, including tea or coffee with a hot cross bun.

Doors open at 12.00 and the film runs from 12.30 – 2.00pm.

The film is a good opportunity to reflect on the meaning of Easter for oneself, and to share with others.

An invitation to the Film, “Risen”
