All Saints

The parish of Christ with All Saints Heaton Norris has a population of 6060 in 2811 households (1991 census). About 85% falls within the Ward of South Reddish (one of the two Wards of greatest socio-economic need in the Borough of Stockport). The population is overwhelmingly white and tends to comprise first-time buyers and is very transient: people often moving on after 2 or 3 years or when a child is born. However, a large minority of people have lived in the parish for several decades.

People live in mixed housing stock of generally good condition. There are, however, several patches of poor and substandard accommodation and several high-rise blocks of council flats that, although recently modernised, contain higher than average levels of social deprivation even for the area.

There are two Primary Schools, All Saints (controlled), and Whitehill (state). The vicar visits weekly to teach and do assemblies and there are warm and developing links with both schools. There are also two state nursery schools and one secondary unit for teenagers.

While the small (25) regular congregation is on the whole elderly this is in no way reflected in the attitude of the congregation which seeks to open its worship and facilities as much as possible to the needs of the local community and is concerned to build bridges with the young families and children of the parish. The parish has in the past 12 months raised £80,000 for the recruitment of a paid Youth Worker to run an open youth group for the local community using the church hall as its base. The Youth Group opened in March 2003.

Formal worship takes place on Wednesday morning, and on Sunday at 10.30 a.m. The tradition of the church has always been liberal catholic, but the congregation is open to most things!
